I may be in the market for a cheap commuter to go along with my road bike. I don't want to leave an expensive bike outside all day but I am ok with a cheaper one.
Does anyone have any knowledge or opinions on those companies that do the custom fixies? BigShot, Sole, Republic, etc?
hmm, seems like they are all cheap bikes that sucker people in with the color combos. that said, i am riding this thing 20 or so mins each way to and from work and I am a sucker.

A friend of a friend runs a company called Stray Cat
Bikes, they're simple, well built & good looking bikes. Eva has one & I helped put it together. I'd have bought one as well for a city commuter but ended up buying a bike from a friends.

After spending way to much time today looking at fixie/ss bikes it is clear the hipsters drive everything.
I come up with 6 different companies selling cool/custom bikes for under $500.

Pure Fix
From reviews and comments it seems like all of them are going for aesthetics and targeting a very specific market. Stray Cat and Big Shot at least have chromoly frames while the others are all hi ten steel.
IMO, I think that at a few hundred bucks who really cares about the materials etc. If you like the way it looks and will actually ride it go for it.
The only way I see buying something even cheaper would be used or walmart.
Would not go this route for my road bike, but like I said, I am just looking for a cheapo commuter.
How about craigslist? Especially being so close to williamsburg, I figure you could pick up a cheap, used locker bike. I built my pista concept up from a frame bought off craig's here.
With all the lbs around there, you could easily get your cranks/bb/bars 'n all that for super cheap.

I brought my fixie with me from Michigan to ride summer streets and around westchester. I plan on selling it before the move to Seattle, and it would awesome to see it go to an ELer. It's a great bike, flip flop hub, new seat, pursuit bars. I'll post some pics later tonight.

Starting to get the hang of this bike maintenance thing. Clean & teardown last night, rebuild tonight. Checked/regreased the bottom bracket and retuned my rear derailleur tonight while drinking beers. Then proceeded to go out on the street and do skids and curb skinnies to "check the alignment" of the derailleur :)

2nd for the Lager, had one for a few years. Great bike, used it as a commuter or on slow poke road rides. Had to sell it to fund my 29er (now my main ride). You should be able to find one on sale for under 500.

Will upgrade to electronic shifting then onto a mountain bike build. Am sure I'll have questions for ya....
Loving my new bike. Blew the rear tire on monday and havent been able to get a full pump on it so its riding a little flat. Love bombing hills on it holding on for dear life. Anyone know how much reconstructive gooch surgery is though?
Bike park day. Rode like a poo-say and had some weird runs where my feet keep coming off the pedals on a triple line. Not cool and had some close calls with "shinburger". Didn't lose much blood though. Overall I rode alright though and got nice & aggressive through the bermy dusty shit.
Fun day yesterday with laps through Empire (super-gnar illegal DH trail) and a semi-poached lap of resort riding.
