this would be rad for the zombie apocolypse, not so much in a hiking area for living people.

Heading out to the Fruita bike fest this weekend, camping nearby. I just blew a silly amount of money at REI getting all the essentials as it's been a while since I've camped. I have the sleeping stuff and tent, but jetboil, cooking utensils, camp chairs etc I had either sold or stored in NZ. Looking forward to hitting the road Friday with a car full of camping gear and bikes on the back.

A popular local hiking area has it's own wolf pack and there is another pack in the wilderness area behind my local ski area. Some have even been spotted at the ski area last fall.

One of the pups from the local pack.

While discussing details of our trip for the end of this summer my dad mentioned it would be a good excuse for me to get a small tent for myself and offered to buy one for me. Any recommendations on a small (probably 2 person) tent. Not looking for super light weight but lighter is always better and not crazy expensive. Something that will last for a long time as i don't see myself wanting to spend money to replace it anytime soon.

i picked up REI's "Passage 2" tent last spring for myself. i used it just about every day for 3 months over the summer, plus some in the fall / winter, and been really happy with it.

pretty cheap, super easy set up, fits me and i'm 6'4". plus you gotta factor in that you can return / replace this any time with no questions asked.

Can't go wrong with an REI tent. Lifetime warranty too on all things they sell.

This one is a little cheaper than the Passage 2, but weighs a pound more.

Headed out for a 13.5 mile one night trip in the North Fork John Day Wilderness in NE Oregun this week.

Packed my bag tonight, just missing a few items like more food, hoody, water. What is pictured weighed in at 21.5 lbs. Not bad considering my pack weighs 5.4 lbs EMPTY. I should get by with far less than the 35 lbs that I carried last August.

We should see a few old mining claims along our route including an old miners cabin "the bigfoot hilton" sounds fun.

Yeah REI is great. Several items I have are REI brand and a lot of other stuff was bought there.

By next year I will probably get a new backpack and sleeping bag. My current bag is 5.5 lbs empty and my sleeping bag is 4 lbs and not very warm.

Anyone visit a backpacking forum? Recommendations?

you need to cut some of that weight, 10 lbs in a pack and a sack, that is a lot.

one of my colleagues just finished a traverse over the Greenland ice cap from east to west with some clients. Pretty gnar-bar:

Another colleague just left for Americuh and is making an attempt at Denali with one client.

.....and what am I doing? Crunching fucking numbers in Excel in a dank office.

their big sale is going on right now. have this on the way to me. climbing specific but it should be versatile enough to use for a couple of nights. my current pack is 13 years old so i'm pretty excited

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying to go out often enough that I will know what the essentials are and can pair down my gear. Once I do I'll probably pick up an UL pack.

A little bummed by the forecast though. High of 40-50 and chance of rain. Hope we can stay relatively dry.

so I walked into an REI in Eugene just to check out tents for my trip back to michigan from tahoe. The guy there was really cool and sold my girlfriend and I on the idea of camping. We bought the rei camp dome 2 and are having an amazing time. Since then we camped on the oregon coast, mt hood, eastern washington, yellowstone and are currently on our way to arches national park.
