looks like "sometimes"dylan is coming on the lituya trip. stoked!
my brother got into the electrician's union today and starts work/training right away, so he can't take the time off. a little bittersweet i guess, but dylan is the next closest thing to a blood brother. good times ahead!
dylan kinda wanted me to keep it a surprise until we did it - he had the idea to bring our splits and ride in lituya, but now it looks like that's not gonna happen. getting to the snow is an adventure in its self through thick woods and brush, and i can't see any higher terrain where there will be enough snow on anything but the back of the bay which is basically big mountain territory with glaciers and rock faces. probably would have been the first people to ever ride snow there cause it's not a place many people go.. oh well

The native Tlingit people were afraid of Lituya Bay. The pre-European Tlingits had a horror of death by drowning, which interrupts the soul’s cycle of cremation and rebirth, giving rise to baleful beings called Land Otter Men. Lituya Bay had many, and when angry they were known to shake the bay and flush it clean of living things. Russians of the Bering expedition found the bay in 1741, but lost 15 men there in the vicious seas. In 1786, the explorer La Pérouse also lost 21 of his men in the extreme tidal currents at the entrance to the bay. In 1853 or 1854, a great wave swept the bay and killed all of the native inhabitants. Other recorded waves came in 1899 and 1936, but by this time, no one lived in the bay any longer due to its fierce reputation.
no harm in dreaming haha, just hope the weather is good. with a little swell the trip there would be alright because we'd be going with the waves, but with a south/southwest swell we'd be getting hammered for however long the return trip takes.
she hits the water today. bottom cleaned of all barnacles and their glue, inside cleaned out and looking good, got all the electronics hooked back up today and everything seems to be working, new smoke stack for the stove that's gonna help improve proper heating.... ready for harvest time. we head out a week from tomorrow.. always so excited for the first trip of the season.

back on land. lituya bay was the most amazing place i've ever been, with the roughest seas i've ever experienced on the way there. the seraphina usually cruises at 25kt... we couldn't safely do much more than the 6kt we were doing. surfed a wave through the entrance during the ebb tide, the worst time to do it (not much of a choice at the time), as a tightly packed swell with chop on top was coming from the side and i was looking UP at the peak while out on the back deck. in retrospect, i don't think i/we have ever been closer to dying... but don't get me wrong, it was a great thrill and a hell of an experience and i'd do it again in a heartbeat. had a few moments dead in the water on the coast at icy point as well, which was a bit of a hair raiser. rest of the trip was great. sleeping in bays on the outer coast looking over the greatest and most vast & endless feature of our planet is always humbling, as were the landscapes in lituya, paired with the knowledge of the bay's harsh past and seeing it with my own eyes. in closing, i don't want to be back home. i find it hard to make sense of many things in "civilized" life when i come back from the ocean. and yes of course, everything was thoroughly documented in photos and on film, though nothing could be done justice, as that would be impossible. onward...

i couldn't find a single photo online that showed much of it at all. after being there it's almost a whole different place. a truly astounding landscape. i almost want to say it feels like the experience of getting there, being there, and sleeping there changed me on some level. trip of a lifetime. about to look at photos and watch all the video clips on an actual computer. eta for both? not sure. i think i'm going to start on photos tomorrow after i come back down to earth.
so many to go through, but here's two for now, shot as we were fishing south of cross sound near deer harbor. a large pod of 40-50 orca passed near our boat, backed by the fairweathers shooting above 15,000ft from the ocean. the first photo is after they passed so it was shot in the other direction. i wanted a better photo of them in front of the range more than anything, but it didn't happen.

better yet...wife may stay up there to spend a few days with the kids next week. so, home alone, i may try and sneak OUT for an ocean trip on monday or tuesday evening after work. hmmm...

This just now came up in the news after being discovered by a pilot flying over. There was an enormous landslide below Lituya Mountain on June 11, just 9 days after we were in Lituya Bay. They say it could possibly be the largest slide recorded in North America... so big that it registered as a 3.4 earthquake in both the US and Canada, without even being an earthquake. This is the same mountain on which the slide occurred that created the largest wave in recorded history, inside the bay in 1958. Damn... I can't wait to go back there.

Heading up north with a long time friend to meet up with some other friends for a fishing trip. Will probably do a few days at Slave Lake (north of Edmonton) and Winagami Lake (near Peace River) looking forward to going after some Pike and not working.

heading up to ct for some more lake fishing. last trip a few weeks ago was one of the best days fishing i've had on that lake...tons of bass, and the biggest pickeral i've ever caught or ever see. the thing fought for what seemed like forever...my drag was screaming. great day.
oh and just booked this bad 61' motherfucker for an august charter off the OUTer banks. like a bawss...
you sure the boat in the picture is 61? looks smaller. badass either way. when i was 12, we rented a 38' that looks about the same size as that boat, and headed to the outer coast for the first time. pretty rad to be out there in a floating luxury house.. you'll have a blast

went floating on the Yellowstone yesterday, caught a Rainbow and 2 browns. There was a rad old dude with us who SUPed the river and was fishing with Popeil pocket fisherman, and he was slaying it. Next, I gotta get back to the Missouri where my Dad's crew caught 60 walleyes in a couple hours. those things taste sooo goood

been looking at getting a skiff for a while now. of course there are a lot in town, but the ones in my price range always have something that puts me off. then i found this gem. i would probably get a new motor, but the thing looks to be in great shape and has a lot of cool features for a skiff this size. hard cabin, two seater, storage underneath the bow in front of the cabin, storage space up front on deck, bench in the back, fishing rod rack, outboard is sort of wrapped in but is not quite a drop through style of some other skiffs, and when i was checking it out, it seems it even has its own bilge pump which i don't think i've ever seen on a skiff. making some phone calls and we'll see where this goes. hopefully it's legit and it works out....
