I think Duhg has the right idea. The more self moderation and peer moderation there is the less need there will be for actual moderation. And the less actual moderation there is the less people are going to get pissed off at some very well meaning hard working people who are only trying to do their job.

What did I miss with him? Last I saw he seemed like kind of a tool but he was keeping a level head whenever we prodded him, then he just stopped coming around.

     me too.

really, here's my contribution. i was a pretty active contributor on the BMB, i really want to contribute here, i think i have info worth reading, but i feel less compelled to. there seems to be a general lack of respect that sticks in my craw. it's been fun to reconnect with former BMBers, i was away for awhile & familiar is good, but seriously some of you are a**holes who just need to go away.

    i agree with earlier comments,
    1) if a user has ANY mod powers it should be CLEARLY displayed, but i honestly don't know that i have participated enough to know if moderation is adequate or needs improvement
    2) i like the +/- ranking, works great on engadget
    3) i'd love to see us police ourselves, but this situation seems to prove us incapable

i know i am no shining example of peace, love and happiness and have argued on the internet, and even directed some of my own grumpiness at Loungers in the BMB days(i've tried to apologize to them all) but i LOVE snowboarding, i get all jazzed about the industry (because i'm sick in the head or something) i really want this place to be somewhere i WANT to log in to daily, but some of you just make it plain sh!tty because this is where you come to act out your angst and insecurity, go get your butt kicked in a krav maga class, gain some perspective and contribute in a positive way, i don't know, or just go away.

I have to say I've had a much different experience than Six. I lurked on the bmb and occasionally posted, but almost every thread was over run with nonsense eventually. I don't see anything like that here and don't understand that Six seems to see so much of it? There is way less material here for sure but it seems to me there is a general stoke and pleasantness, I don't see the general lack of respect he seems to see. Maybe you could point out some examples?

I think people need to remember this is an online forum after all, It's just not going to be super nice all the time. I also don't really see anything here that would drive new users away. Have you guys ever been on any car, video game or sports forums? They all can be extremely adversarial and difficult to assimilate into, and I think that's the nature of forums that become clubs of sorts. I think thats why user moderation never works, everyone is seen as equal and it looks to me from the outside that someone engaging in a big argument isn't going to listen to some other peer to tone it down, they already know what they should be doing but they are choosing to ignore it, hence the need for an authority to intervene. I don't think self moderation works, it just pisses people off and then it escalates and mods get involved anyway. If you want to have a serious wide reaching forum you need moderators.

Just a question, are the giveaways going to resume soon?

goggles said: trying to keep up. 2 cents from a bmb vet:
    - i love the little community we've built here, for good and bad
    - i like the level of mod the way it is
    - i think it will help if mods are identified
    - i don't think there needs to be a +/- function
    - i don't think there needs to be an ignore button (i can ignore withOUT help if i want)
    - i think people should generally respect eachother, even though it's the internets
    - maybe the bar should be moved down the line a little
    - more small mammals for butts
    - yay chappy

    +1
With the exception that I think a +/- would help. Similar to the suggestion I threw out to Lars about a "agree/ disagree" button on the site feedback thread.

Re: hatters idea of a Cage Match Forum, where e-fights get sent to a cyber back-room where bare-knuckled "fuck YOU"s abound... It has some pros and cons:

    PROS
    - despite my strong pacifist leanings, I can't deny that a good e-fight isn't sometimes the most entertaining thing around
    - it would keep it away from newbs, and not pollute the EL general vibe
    - it would be (potentially) cathartic for those involved
    - snowboarders have always had a "edge", and I don't like to see that vibe totally neutered

    CONS
    - in plain sight or not, fighting on the internet is still like winning the Special... oh hell. You know how it goes
    - just because you move it to another venue doesn't mean things won't get potentially really toxic
    - how would the mods know when to move an argument over to the Cage Fight ? would you give the participants 1 or 2 warnings, and then go "OK that's it ! locking this thread, and you two - go to your corners in the Cage Fight, and come out swinging for 15 rounds each !"
    - you would have to ensure the two cage-fighters were the only ones able to engage each other, lest everyone jump into the fray and it becomes a giant mess of butt-hurt

I mean, if you had this Cage Match forum, to make it fair and (possibly fun & minimize butt hurt) - you'd have to run it like a real fight. Fifteen rounds (i.e. fifteen posts each). And whoever has made the best point and/or hurled the best insults after their 15 chances to retort, has the on-lookers vote and declare a "winner". And inbetween each 'round, you have a pretty girl in a bikini come out, holding aloft a sign that says "Round 2"....

I dunno though. At some point, heated arguments that blossom into full fledged fights move quickly from the rhetorical, to the personal. That's what I really find distasteful. When it's not enough to hate on someone's choices, opinions, or personality, but when it moves to hating on their looks, their gender, their ethnicity, their age, their family, their kids, their sexuality. Yet that very nastiness at it's essence, is what people find so enthralling during an e-fight. I've seen it happen. It's like a train wreck - it's horrific, but they can't look away. Would mods have the to power to delete fight threads if they degenerated into that kind of personal, nasty stuff ? Or would the slugfest go on, no holds barred ?
