Didn't you ask every El member to stop using the words ghey, ghay, gay, etc because you found it offensive?

To be fair, Yes I did ask, but not because I find it offensive, but because it IS offensive and ignorant and shows absolute zero class. I did not call for any action to be taken from mods/voices/et al(pretty sure i didn't but I'm not taking the time to go back and look either).

I don't use those words to describe anything. However, it is your opinion that they are offensive, ignorant, and classless. I don't feel that way about it at all and wouldn't judge an individual if he/she used those words descriptively even on a regular basis. But if I was in your shoes would I choose to press the ignore button if they did? That's what I'm trying to get at here. Trying to wrap my head around the ignore/censor button idea.

    Monkeyshines, thanks for posting.
Re: "One who are you to request anything?"
I don't think that only mods should do the nose-sticking-in thing, otherwise they would be overrun with petty cr*p and I don't think that should be their role. In our family (I have three boys) my wife and I hear our boys going at it a lot and we choose to stay out of it and let them sort it out amongst themselves. Often, the one boy not involved in the dispute is the one to tell the other two to stick a sock in it and bring things to a calm resolution. I guess I just apply the same reasoning here. I'm not sure if that is right or wrong.

I disagree with you. Mind your own business. Granted, what Doc said to you was inappropriate, but this is not your house so please don't impose your parenting methods on our public internet forum.

    how is an example imposing?

I find it to be presumptuous based on his reasoning. If I start moderating when I feel the need to moderate (when in fact I am not a moderator) it only leads to more nonsensical/spam/curse laden post.

    OK, how about this analogy?

If two people are arguing loudly a few cubes away from you in your office, would you ask them to please quiet down, or would you alert your boss or would you wait until your boss happens by?

You're being obtuse. To me, what you're doing when you impose your reasoning is as bad as baiting or insinuating something in a post.
Maybe we do need this ignore button after all?

I'm sorry you feel that way, Bdawg. That is not my intention.
IMO, if two people are "going at it" in a thread, it affects more than just those two people. I don't think that asking them to cool down or take it to PMs is inflammatory or baiting.

I know you don't but those posters in said argument surely will and do. Especially if it is coming from someone who is not a moderator.

at the risk of doing what you're saying you don't like, bdawg, i agree w/ duhg. there are exceptions of course but often it just takes a little perspective that a 3d person can provide.

    A very good point.
But that is part of the matter. Do we only look to mods for "behavior modification" or is there some set of (un)written code that people can be gently reminded of by anyone in the community?

Please believe that I am not trying to be argumentative here, I am just trying to find out for myself what the will of board is on this matter.

Hahaha Contra. Well, we're not in an argument or "going at it." This is an open discussion. But If this is the consensus of most users/members here I hope that when arguments ensue (which inevitably they will) that the PM method is used.

I know you're not being argumentative and I hope you don't think I am. I feel we should only look to mods for "behavior MODifcation." I don't believe in any unwritten code here. There are only the terms and agreements which we all have had to agree to in order to post here. Maybe they are too vague? "A kinder, gentler EL...?"

    Ha!

So far there has been one bus ride at Homewood when I started singing it (very loudly) and had about 30 people join me in the chorus... Good times.

The snooty people at N* didn't think it was quite as funny. I only had about 15 people join in (Stealth and Serraph being two of them) while standing in line for vista chair.

If your intent was to stop the fight, you should have told both of them to shut the fuck up. I really don't care, I'm just saying.

I just read through the thread, there are quite a few alright ideas but I just don't see anything that's going to really work. I don't know maybe I'm just being negitive, I'm tired, sore, full, and stuck in a hotel. I normally love hotels, not tonight though. Just nit feeling it.
