actually, we're not, and a lot of our prospective visitors are not

Really? When it's in the '11 gear thread? Probably most every newcomer to the board is going to eventually find that thread and go through it.

    "We're all adults here"

Well.. maybe chronologically. Maybe. Attitude-wise though? Not so much. I think it's been made pretty obvious of late that the board isn't working with a minimal amount of moderation. Especially since this isn't just a board for people to hang out on, it's directly tied with Chappy's business. I can't really think of many business owners who would want this type of community associated with their business. Doc may well be a great fount of information that many, many people would do well to listen to, but he's also one of the most annoying, antagonistic posters I have ever seen. He regularly launches into mind-numbing tirades of near-biblical proportions. Behaviour like that just simply shouldn't be tolerated in a setting such as a business's website. Something has to be done. Whether it's hardcore moderating, ignore features, voting on threads, etc. If everyone here were actually adults and acting accordingly, discussions such as this wouldn't even take place.

yeah, i suppose i treat this place more like a place to procrastinate than a marketing platform. from chappy's point of view i guess it makes sense to mod a little more. my fear is that it will sterilize it. i think if people aren't mature enough to do their own ignoring or tone down their own posts, more moderation might hide some of the pettiness but in the end it will somehow still come out. but, like i said, i understand chappy's desire to make this place more welcoming.

Hmmmm. A thought on the fact of this forum being part of Chappy's business...
If your friend owned a Starbucks, would you go in there and act like an ass?

    Monkeyshines, thanks for posting.
Re: "One who are you to request anything?"
I don't think that only mods should do the nose-sticking-in thing, otherwise they would be overrun with petty cr*p and I don't think that should be their role. In our family (I have three boys) my wife and I hear our boys going at it a lot and we choose to stay out of it and let them sort it out amongst themselves. Often, the one boy not involved in the dispute is the one to tell the other two to stick a sock in it and bring things to a calm resolution. I guess I just apply the same reasoning here. I'm not sure if that is right or wrong.

    More Moding FTL
    Less Moding FTL
The amount of moderation here is dang near perfect, and from what I can tell Dave and Chappy are pretty dang good guys that are unbiased and fair. If we were to cut Mods, I think you 2 should still stay in place.
My real problem came from the fact that Docs posts were edited but COisOKs remained up. What? Doc swore at him? Oh No! COisOK wanted to shoot the barking dog. If you're going to edit one, edit the other.

Good point Contra. However, spam and opinions are different things, though I supposed someone could spam you with their opinions.

Also, being bozo'd doesn't mean that you can't come back when you are ready to play nice (as Chappy has said multiple times).
While you could argue that DasBlunt hasn't been playing nice I would reply that WE (as a whole community and Doc in particular) haven't been playing nice with him by not giving him a chance to move past his COOK phase.

Now, maybe it is too late for DasBlunt, but the fact that he is COOK doesn't excuse the way he was recieved. Not defending him. Just saying there is a lot going on here. Who should be banned and who shouldn't be banned is a can of worms that I am glad I don't have to deal with.

I am a member of a cycling forum, that is IMO the best designed and run forum i have ever used. It is also the 11th biggest cycling website on the WWW

It has the ignore function, and it works brilliantly.

They also have a Private forum section, that only members can post in, and is invisible to anyone not logged in. This is good for obvious reasons.

    Here's my 2 cents:

    (1) I totally back the +/- thing, excellent idea.

    (2) With an "ignore user" option, wouldn't you lose a lot of understanding of what's going on? Imagine the doc vs. dasblunt fights if you had one of them "ignored", it would be like watching the main character in Fight Club. This seems like a bad idea to incorporate here.

    (3) I really liked on the DMB how the mods were all there only to moderate, not to participate much. JBGoode and VinylBaller and whoever else never really participated in the discussions, they just popped in from time to time and moderated as necessary. Maybe we could ditch the "resident mod" idea and get someone else who doesn't participate much to moderate? Note that I am NOT suggesting that this "new mod" be an existing mod, I don't want to see any of them participate less around here.

(3a) on the topic of moderation, I'm in the 'don't moderate any less than you're already doing' boat... but perhaps the +/- idea would make moderation by an authority figure less necessary.

    (4) I'd like to see some sort of marking/badge on the "voices" and mods. I'd also like to see some sort of marking on everyone, indicating how much they participate in the forum. Maybe not as obvious and lampoonable as the green bars from the DMB, but along the same vein. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a way for incoming folks to see if they're talking to a "frequent flyer" or a "fellow noob".

I send pms asking to tone it down and if it continues to escalate I alert Chappy. Just wondering why you feel like we can't moderate efficiently?

As somewhat a newbie here, I thought I might share my vision as a "newcomer". After my first couple interactions, I was thinking, yeah, not the forum for me, these people are assholes. Luckily, a couple of the people that aren't, stepped in with some nice comments and PM's, so I've stuck around. But yes, as a newcomer, reading through all the drama in posts like the 2011 thread or others to get to the stuff you actually want to read is a little frustrating and exhausting. It does seem very "high school".

BUT, there's a couple people I have chatted with on here that seem really rad and makes me want to stick around. So, here's my suggestions:

I agree that the EL Bar should be moved to the bottom. I also think that more "Recent Posts' should show up on the first page as a post can disappear pretty quickly to the other pages with all the other junk being added.

I think the ignore doesn't really accomplish what you're looking for as what someone said, newcomers will still see the stuff that's being ignored.

+/- might work, but that could turn into wars where people just - everything someone says to be a jerk.

I used to be on a wakeboarding forum that had a feature of "New since last visit" that brought up all the new topics since you last checked out the forum. And one that brought up ones you had commented on (without having to subscribe to email notifications for it). These were both awesome because you could look at just the posts you were interested in instead of sifting through all the crap.

And I agree with BDawg about the posts that Chappy probably wants to be highlighted getting buried. He said he was asking about a new product and nobody even noticed it. Same thing happened to me when I asked about a board decision while the "Did DrJCV leave?" thing was going on and I had to bump it 2x before anybody noticed.

Seems like a good bit of people are here for the wrong reasons, and so maybe a little bit more mod would help, definitely not less mod.
