I’ve been through my share of Burton AK jackets over the years – even going back to the precursor “Tri-Lite” line as well as old “Outland” jackets – and I gotta say that I’m pretty fired up on this new 2010 Burton AK 3L Hover Jacket in the Resin colorway. First off, yes this jacket isn’t cheap. In fact, it’s up from the $499.95 price tag that it had last year. However, this thing is a supreme work of Gore-Tex™ 3L laminated, waterproof / breathable technology. It’s also extremely functional and durable and will protect me from the elements in Tahoe, Alaska, or wherever I might want to take it – and in whatever conditions I can subject it to.

The first thing that you’ll notice when you take this jacket off the rack is that it’s very lightweight and has a good, soft fabric “hand” as they like to say in the garment industry. The weight savings comes anytime that you use a “three layer” (3L is the designation) lamination process where the Gore-Tex™ membrane is sandwiched between the outer and inner fabric of the jacket with no mesh or fleece or anything else on the inside of the jacket. The outer shell is Burton’s highest-end “Pro Shell.” The fibers are smaller and have a tighter weave than other “Performance” or “Soft” shell jackets. This is combined with an inner “Micro Grid Backer” fabrication process that ensures the overall durability of the jacket is increased as well as enhancing the breathability. Because I snowmobile a lot in the backcountry I’m constantly running the risk of catching and ripping my outerwear on any number of things – like my broken tailgate on my truck or the sharp gunnels on my sled – before I ever get to the trees and granite and volcanic rocks of Tahoe. So essentially the combination of the Pro Shell and the Micro Grid Backer – with Gore’s inner membrane all laminated together – produces the most lightweight and durable AK fabric Burton has. It helps to have Gore- Seam™ “tiny tape” used to seal all the seams and help take a couple more ounces off the total weight as well.

With all of that technicality just in the fabric and membrane, you might be a little surprised to find that there aren’t a lot of other “bells ‘n whistles” compared to what you find mind in a more fashion-forward jacket from Burton. Yes there is an iPod compartment with a slot to run your headphone chord up through. Yes it has a nice pass holder / ID spot. Yes there is a powder skirt / waist gaiter with Burton’s Link- Zip™ jacket-to-pant interface. However, to be honest I’ll be cutting out that whole thing as it’s just extra material to me that I’ll never use. I’ll put on a one-piece suit if I want to mate up my jacket and pants. For people that don’t have a whole wardrobe at their disposal like I’m lucky to have, though, the interface system works just great for stormy, snowy days. The bottom line, though, is that this jacket is not supposed to have a shiny satin lining and secret compartments and zippers galore and the such. Nope. This is a piece of equipment for your upper body to be honest – and equipment that allows you to go out in a heavy, wet snowstorm and shred for hours in pure, dry bliss. Riri AQUAzip™ water-resistant zippers along with an excellent low profile, contoured, cinchable hood round out the features that allow you to have that shit-grin on your face in the lift line when it’s puking snow out. Oh, I almost forgot to mention one other facet to this jacket. The folks at FYi Design who help design and test the Burton AK line of outerwear in the foul weather of the mountains of British Columbia have also put their stamp of approval on it too. Trust me. Trust them. Trust Burton. This jacket is dope.

And as if it needed any other cherry on top? Like all jackets over $250 from Burton, it has a lifetime warranty against manufacturer’s defect as well as a lifetime, waterproof warranty from Gore-Tex™.
