Other than the price that thing is very cool. I wonder if I'd find merino blends itchy?

The tech hoodie is what i would like. But its only available in N.America. And it would be nice if they had a crew and a non zip hoodie with the same material.

As for base layer, I'm a ninja suit convert as of last season. The hoodless one is perfect for me. I'm planning on getting a 2nd one this season. I already have a full-length sumo suit, too.

I picked up a Neff Daily Shredder hoodie for this season. 100% poly bonded fleece, longer cut (without being all new schooler), and it has thumb loops. It looks like a good spring outer layer, or a mid layer for super-cold days.

Yeah get a normal tighter fitting base layer and you should be fine. The burton mid weight stuff is pretty nice. Size down though it fits pretty big

My experience is limited to a few trips where the temp can go as low as -10c.

But since I'm a fat lad I never needed more than a baselayer - normally reduced icebreaker gear nabbed from a market - a burton havoc flannel and a shell jacket.

In the -2 to -4c in the snowdome its just baselayer and a hoody.

In Canada. Check out mec.ca. It's like our version of Rei but with less brand variety. They have tons of polartech and insulated mid layers. Many with hoods which is rad.

I have a B park crew, that I wear as a mid layer. I like it.

Not as bulky as my fleece, "feels better" than a regular crew (maybe breathability?) that I would sometimes wear to cut on bulk, and inexpensive.

Did just fine when it would "drop" (I'm from california) into the low teens at boreal.

Patagonia nanopuff is the best for....pretty much everything. I used my friend's and was amazed at how light it is and how warm it is. I can't afford one though.

its windstopping DOES NOT come from the weave. it comes from the membrane. dwr doesn't stop wind. its wind proofing does come from a "layer"

tekniq33 said: To clarify, I am talking about what is between my uninsulated shell and my baselayer. When it is ridiculously cold in VT, there has to be something fairly substantial there or I am going to freeze my nips off. I have a North Face Redpoint Optimus synthetic insulation jacket that I use. Otherwise I have to rock my down jacket.
Like I said, I don't have to buy a snowboard brand, I am just surprised there is not a lot out there. I guess they figure they will sell you a $300 shell and a $300 down jacket, instead of $300 for the shell and $150 for the mid-layer. I will probably stick with the north face or get the Patagonia down jacket.

seriously, give the winstopper fleece a shot.

Of course we can agree to disagree on this one but from my point of view, Windstopper Fleece as a midlayer doesn't make much sense. You don't need the wind stopping mid layer if you've got a shell on. Windstopper fleece is less breathable, heavier, less packable and stiffer.

all of this is true, but it's warm as hell and it's breathable enough for me. i never feel stuffy or wet underneath it, ever. that level of layering is hard to find, it's usually either a lot lighter fleece or a puff layer
edit: also, the outside of windstopper is nothing like a softshell or a bonded hoodie, its winstopping comes from the weave, not a DWR kind of layer or anything.

windstopper has a membrane.
http://www.windstopper.com/remote/Satellite/toc/TechnologyOfComfortFrameset/index

but the membrane is on the inside...
